The hummingbird (
Archilochus colubris) is one popular bird in the garden. We have a couple of regulars around the yard. They seem to like almost any colorful flower in the yard but are especially attracted to the zinnias. I've not only seen them on the zinnias but also the morning glories, the salvias, and even the tomato blossoms. The only reason we put the hummingbird feeder out is to see them up close.
Here he is resting on the feeder. All that flapping must make a hummingbird tired. Can you imagine the calories this little guy uses in a day? The wings can beat anywhere from 40-80 times per second.
Good job on the pictures! I hope the kids love watching them.

I feel so sorry for those that live where hummingbirds don't. I just love them, and they're so friendly! I wish they could talk instead of that little squeak they do!
ReplyDeleteI love these little guys. I could sit all day & watch them. They are friendly, as to even fly along side you. I have 2 that come back every yr. & I can tell them apart.

Hi Dave, great pics. I had one feeder and there is one male who keeps chasing off the females, so I put up another feeder yesterday and it seems to help all get some liquid refreshment! I was just wondering how much longer the birds will be in the Nashville area.
