Three Yellow Perennials in My Garden

Yellow is a color that just seems to brighten things up. It’s like bringing  a little sunshine to the earth and into the garden. Most of my yellow plants love soaking up the sun which is great since shade in my garden is extremely limited. Today I’m showing you 3 of the yellow perennials from my garden (achillea, coreopsis, and gaillardia) but there are many more great yellow perennial selections you could choose to plant in your garden.

This yellow achillea is just outside my vegetable garden. It attracts all kinds of pollinators and has never been nibbled on by any deer or rabbits.

Another yellow flowering perennial is this coreopsis. I have no idea what the variety is since it self-sowed in this location next to the ‘Husker’s Red’ Penstemon. I suspect it’s related to a ‘Jethro Tull’ coreopsis I once had. Sadly ‘Jethro’ is no longer with us, but maybe ‘Jethro Jr.’ lives on…

One of my favorite yellow flowering perennials is this gaillardia, ‘Oranges and Lemons’. It doesn’t seem to enjoy locations that are too wet in the winter but otherwise is pretty easy to grow. It’s offspring will not return true but can be quite attractive anyway. My first ‘Oranges and Lemons’ gaillardia that died left behind seeds that became a really nice replacement. Gaillardias bloom profusely and never seem to quit until the weather changes in late fall. ‘Oranges and Lemons’ is patented so no illegal plant propagation for this one!

  1. Stopping by from A Diva's Garden. I love yellow too! I have yellow Glads & yellow marigolds. Looking to add a few others as I expand my garden space. Such a warming color.

  2. I have the Jethro Tull & yours look like mine. I also have yellow day lilies, yellow knockout rose, a yellow mum {not blooming} & a yellow Stokes aster {Mary Gregory}. Had to have that one as it was my mom's name.

  3. I've just found your blog a couple days ago and I'm addicted. I've joined your FB too! I really love your writing.

Anyhoo… I've got Black Eyed Susies and a fav, Black Eyed Susan Vine which usually re-seeds itself but didn't this year. hmmpf! Yellow roses, lilies, tick seed and one of my all time favorite little go getter plants the Snap dragon. I have got an ever growing patch of Goldenrod that a little bird left for me that is turning into a bully. I even forked over some cash for a yellow petunia that I'm hoping to get cuttings from, have you gotten cuttings from petunias?

  4. Lola,

It's nice to have plants that remind us of people! I have a bunch of yellow daylilies around too.

    Jaime,

Glad to have you as a reader! I've never gotten a petunia to root but I'm sure it is possible. For some reason I just don't get that much into petunias although my wife likes them. I buy a few for her each year to plant in the garden.

    Eileen,

I think sometimes when we have really cold and wet winters the gaillardias can have trouble.

    Darla,

I have zinnias coming – I hope! At least the seeds were planted!

  5. Thanks for stopping by Dave. I'm going to learn a lot from you! I purchased rabbit fencing for the veggie garden. We took it down into the ground about 3 inches so they won't dig under it. I'm trying these granule repellents by Sweeney around the perimeter too. I picked it up at the local Tractor & Farm supply store. Hoping that it will work. The reviews that I found were good.

  6. Oh, Wow! I don't have those but I could use them. Beautiful, that Gaillardia. I have yellow roses and daylilies and Blackeyed Susans and Shasta daisies with yellow centers — all in the same bed, anchored by a golden euonymous and a white Crape myrtle.
